We’re just full of surprises, aren’t we?
947 Ride Joburg Road is proud to announce a brand-new route for the 25th edition of Joburg’s iconic road cycling challenge taking place on 21 November 2021.
The latest route will take riders over 97km of thrilling Joburg terrain that they get to own for a day! Our brand new Start/Finish venue at the FNB Stadium will ensure easier access and safe parking. This incredible venue lies at the heart of Joburg, ensuring riders experience the City like never before.
From the FNB Stadium, cyclists head out onto the Soweto highway for a brief loop, passing the iconic Joburg gold mine dumps, hugging Soweto before turning back towards Main Reef Road.
Don’t miss the scenic cityscapes as the route flows onto the M1 S (cycling in a northerly direction). For 3 km, the backmarkers will be able to catch a glimpse of the racing categories jostling for position as they race towards the finish.
From here, riders will join onto the old route on the M1 – a speedy set of undulating downhills towards Woodmead.
Riders will head up to Kyalami for an exclusive opportunity to zip around the world-class Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit before turning onto a new section down Main Road. The first proper ascent comes on this stretch of road as riders climb up to Witkoppen Road, which also marks the King / Queen of the Mountain spot.
The latter half of the route is quite hilly, but the views of Joburg’s leafy tree-lined streets are well worth the effort.
As you approach the last 15km, you will cross the iconic Nelson Mandela bridge before turning onto the M1 S and riding past Gold Reef City.
At this point, you will catch glimpses of the FNB Stadium, which marks the last section of your ride. Your finish will be on Nasrec Road, where you will turn into FNB stadium for a hero’s welcome and great hospitality.
